HISTORY OF JUJUTSU IN AUSTRALIA

… focused on the life and times of Ryugoro Fukushima and the Australian Society of Ju-Jitsuans … by Roger Quick Hanshi

As time allows, for many years I’ve been researching and compiling a history on the arrival to Australia of Jujutsu dating from 1878 and focusing on the life and times of Ryugoro Fukushima.  Progressing to the formation of the Australian Society of Ju-Jitsuans (ASJJ) and recording events throughout the time of the ASJJ.

To-date I’ve managed to compile more than 120 pages into a manuscript, with many more pages of research at hand. Gratefully assisted by documents obtained from both Australian and New Zealand Government archives and research publications; including personal papers of Fukushima sensei completed by hand when seeking New Zealand citizenship and official reports that followed.

Another resource that has become very helpful is Trove, launched in 2009 by the National Library of Australia.  Here old newspapers are gradually being digitized and articles on Ryugoro Fukushima aka Ryugoro Shima and aka Ray Shima, can be accessed by logging into http://trove.nla.gov.au/result?q=shima+jujitsu … In sharing this with graduate members I ask that no alterations to the articles be made, and this information not be shared beyond ASJJ or published.  My reasons are in part, that unfortunately there are so many martial art practitioners without the ethics that I trust is upheld by all within ASJJ … individuals who purport to have lineage and rank that is most questionable.

At present I am unable to suggest when time may allow me to complete the manuscript.  Much of which also involves my validating what I am keen to include.  However, on request while still very much a work in progress, I’m happy to share this with members attending ASJJ camps.

This photo of Ryugoro Fukushima was accessed with permission and is not for reproduction without specific permission … enquiries to Roger Quick.

While my manuscript may still be some time off … I’ve prepared a Timeline on our History accessible within the library to senior graduates.
